On January 16, 2019, the Township Committee introduced an ordinance that would prohibit the possession or consumption of nicotine products, including e-cigarettes, by persons under the age of 21.
The Township Committee recognizes that the skyrocketing use of vaping/nicotine products by young people is a multi-faceted problem that requires multi-faceted solutions. We see this ordinance as one step in moving in that direction.
The Township Committee wants to assure residents that we will not rush through the approval of this local legislation. The Mayor and Township Committee are working to ensure that members of the public have clarity on how this proposed measure would be enforced. Additionally, the state legislature recently introduced legislation addressing this concern of underage possession of e-cigarettes, vaping products and nicotine.
For this reason, the Township Committee will postpone the scheduled vote on this ordinance to May 15, 2019.
At the March 20th Township Committee meeting, there will be a presentation by members of the Police Department and Health Professionals related to this underage E-cigarette/Vaping epidemic , along with a Public Question and Answer Session following the presentation. Written information will be provided as well.
To learn more about this ordinance and participate in this important discussion of the vaping/nicotine epidemic among our young people, we urge the public to attend this upcoming meeting on March 20th, 7:00 PM at the Municipal Building.
