01 HOLIDAY SHOPPING TRIP
This year's shopping trip will be to Reading, PA on Saturday, October 13th. A bus will leave from the Municipal Building at 50 Woodland Avenue at 8 AM and return at approximately 6 PM. If there is not enough interest, the trip will be canceled. Fee: $15.00 per person for the bus.
02 THE GREAT PUMPKIN
A fun morning is planned for ages 4 - 8 years of age. Children will have the opportunity to "pick" and decorate a pumpkin, make a Halloween craft, ride a pony, and enjoy an edible treat. Get in the holiday spirit. Your registration fee must be received by October 15th. Date: Saturday, October 20th from 10 AM-12 Noon Place: Ginty Field and the Recreation Annex at 35 Woodland Avenue Fee: $7.00 per participant
05 TURKEY TROT - A Fun Family Time
The Recreation Department will sponsor foot races of varying distances according to school grades and ages. This is a chance for a family of all age groups to participate in a recreation function. Turkeys will be awarded to the first place winners, and ribbons to the second and third place winners. Grandparents, parents and children can join in the fun! The date is Saturday, November 3rd, at 10 AM. This event will take place at the Morristown Beard School track on Whippany Road. Please register by calling the Recreation Office at 973-326-7371. Don't watch your chances for a big Thanksgiving Day turkey run by you. Get in the race, a turkey may be yours. Only one turkey will be awarded per race.
06 BREAKFAST WITH SANTA
Have breakfast and enjoy great holiday fun and entertainment. Then get ready for Santa to make his appearance and have a picture taken with him. Parents are required to stay with their children throughout the program. This event will be held for children ages 3-6 on Saturday, December 1st from 10 AM to 12 Noon, at the Villa Walsh Auditorium, Western Avenue, Morristown. Space is limited & a large turnout is expected. Reservations and payment must be received by Monday, November 26th. Cost per child: $6.00; cost per Adult: $3.00.
07 DADDY - DAUGHTER SWEETHEART DANCE
Always a favorite event, the Valentine's Dance is spent with Dad's favorite girl, his daughter. Come make an unforgettable memory. Reservations and payment must be received by February 1st. Date: Friday, February 8th (Snow date: February 15th) Ages: 5-10 years Place: Mt. Kemble Firehouse Time: 7 PM - 9 PM Fees: $6.00 per child, $3.00 per adult
08 FAMILY KARAOKE NIGHT
Parents enjoy a Friday evening dancing with your children ages 5 - 10. On this special night you will have fun singing, laughing, dancing and giggling together. At least one adult per family must attend with the children. Location: Mt. Kemble Fire House. Refreshments will be served. Reservations and payment must be received by February 25th. Date: Friday, February 29th Time: 7 PM - 9 PM. (Snow date: Friday, March 7th) Fees: $6.00 per child, $3.00 per adult
09 MOTHER - SON FUN NIGHT
An evening for moms to join their sons, ages 5 to 10, in crafting, participation in team games, & fun dancing. Refreshment will be served. Reservations must be received by March 24th. Date: Friday, March 28th Place: Collinsville Fire House Ages: 5-10 years Time: 7 PM-9 PM Fees: $6.00 per child, $3.00 per adult
10 STROLLING WITH YOUR BABY
There is no better exercise than walking. Let your baby sightsee from the stroller as we walk about 2 miles at a moderate, pleasant pace. For the first stroll everyone will meet at the Woodland Avenue Ginty Field Parking Lot on Thursday, September 20th at 10:30 AM. The group walks a different route each week for 4 weeks. Call the Recreation Office at 973-326-7371 to sign up. A perfect class for new moms!
11 CHESS
The mission of the Township of Morris Recreation Department is to introduce the benefits of a chess education to children. Chess raises self-esteem, teaches determination, self motivation & sportsmanship; & occupies time in a positive manner. Three sessions will be held: Wednesdays starting January 9th to February 13th from 4 PM to 5 PM Wednesdays starting January 9th to February 13th from 6 PM to 7 PM Thursdays starting January 10th to February 14th from 6 PM to 7 PM Children in grades 1 through 8 are eligible to sign up. Registration is limited to 14 per class and will be held at the Recreation Annex, 35 Woodland Avenue. Fee: $15.00 per participant.
12 ADULT SEWING CLASSES
The program offers sewing classes for adults on Wednesday mornings, 9 AM- 11:30 AM, at the Recreation Annex, 35 Woodland Avenue. Select your own project, receive help with altering or join in one of the ideas offered in class. Perhaps, you would like to learn to hem ready-made garments. Whatever your choice, join our informal group and either learn to sew, or to get to those unfinished projects. You must call the Recreation Office at 973- 326-7371 to sign up. Classes start Wednesday, September 12th.
13 CHILDREN'S SEWING (Ages 10-14)
Sewing for children begins in January. Classes meet on Saturday afternoons for six weeks, beginning at 12:15 PM - 1:45 PM for beginners; and 2 PM - 3:30 PM for intermediates. Students learn to use the sewing machine and complete a sewing project. Some supplies are required. If you are interested, call the Recreation Office at 973-326-7371 to sign up as class size is limited. Classes will start Saturday, January 12th at the Recreation Annex, 35 Woodland Avenue. Note: classes will not meet on Saturday, February 1st. Fee: $15.00 per student for the 6 weeks.
14 GIRLS' FASHION CLUB
This class is a hands-on experience: sketching and designing fashion clothing, plus creating fashion collages and displays. Learn about colors, fabrics, fashion trends, designers, and much more. This class is designed for girls 8-12 years of age. Classes will be held at the Recreation Annex, 35 Woodland Avenue for 6 Saturdays, starting March 15th at 1 PM - 2 PM; or 2 PM - 3 PM. Fee is $10.00 per student.
15 BABY SITTING WORK SHOP
A four week babysitting course for 11 to 15 year olds prepares potential baby sitters for the responsibilities of childcare. Comprehensive hands-on training sessions include first aid, safety, feeding, changing, and age appropriate entertainment. Attention will also be given to marketing skills, handling unusual situations, and a "bag of tricks". Note book and pens/pencils are essential. The class will meet at 35 Woodland Avenue on Saturdays, starting January 5th at 10 AM to 11:30 AM. Please call the Parks & Recreation Department at 973-326-7371to sign up.
16 ADULT WATERCOLOR CLASS
1 Do you appreciate art, love color, & have been thinking about painting for a long time? Sign up now! This beginning watercolor class is low key & drawing ability is not a requirement. Elaine Brennick, a local artist & former teacher will introduce you to the pleasures of the medium. Choose either Friday mornings at 10 AM - Noon or Wednesday evenings at 7 PM - 9 PM. Classes run for 6 weeks beginning October 3rd or 5th & will meet at the Recreation Annex, 35 Woodland Avenue. Please register early as the class size is limited. Fee: $25.00 per participant for the 6 weeks.
17 CHILDREN'S ARTS & CRAFTS
(Grades 1-3) A basic craft class for children! Learn to make fun items which can be used as holiday gifts for your parents. This 5 week program will be held during the fall & again in early spring. The fall program will start on Tuesday, October 2nd. The spring program will start on Tuesday, March 4th. All classes will be held from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM or 6:45 PM to 7:45 PM at the Recreation Annex, 35 Woodland Avenue. Registration fee is $15.00 per student
18 CHILDREN'S INTRODUCTION TO KNITTING
New for fall! An introductory knitting class for 10 to 14 year olds will be held for 6 weeks at the Parks and Recreation Annex (35 Woodland Avenue) beginning October 3rd. Classes will be offered on Thursdays at 4 PM to 5 PM. Class size is limited to 10 children per class. Registration fee is $10 per student plus material costs. Classes will be canceled if there are not enough students to hold a class.
19 MUSIC IN MOTION
Music in Motion allows children to have fun interacting with one another through music, movement, exercise, and various game plays while using their social skills as well as their fine and gross motor skills. The 6-week program will be held at the Collinsville Fire House on Fridays starting January 11th and end February 15th. The 21/2-3 year olds will meet at 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, 4 year olds will meet from 10:45 AM to 11:45 AM. Classes are limited to 20, so register early. Fee is $15.00 per child. Due to limited space & safety precautions, children not enrolled in the program will not be permitted in the classroom.
20 POTTERY FOR CHILDREN
Our new instructor will teach children the basics of this popular craft at our Recreation Annex (35 Woodland Avenue). Class size is limited to 18. Registration fee for this program is $60.00 per student and includes cost of the instructors, materials, & firings. Classes for 5-10 year olds will meet for 6 weeks starting as follows: Thursdays, October 25th from 5 PM to 6 PM; Saturdays, October 27th from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM, and 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM. Students will create a project each week. Please register early as this class fills up quickly.
21 FALL PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAM
A special program designed especially for preschool children. Activities include storytelling, arts & crafts, games & much more. The 3 year old class will meet 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. The 4 year old class will meet 10:45 AM to 11:45 AM. Both classes will meet for 4 Saturdays as follows: September 22nd & 29th; October 6th & 13th. Registration fee is $15.00 per child. Classes will be held at the Recreation Annex, 35 Woodland Avenue. Parents must be willing to leave their children with our certified instructors.
22 SPRING PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAM
The sessions are slated for 4 Saturdays starting March 1st through March 29th. The 3 year old classes will be at 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, 4 & 5 year olds will meet at 10:45 AM to 11:45 AM. All classes will meet at the Recreation Annex, 35 Woodland Avenue. Registration fee is $15.00 per child. Parents must be willing to leave their children with our certified instructors.
23 LITTLE SCIENTISTS
Children Experience The Magic of Science. The Township of Morris is proud to offer "Little Scientists", a "hands-on" approach to learning. A sampling of topics includes: Dinosaurs, Fossils, Magnets, & Chemistry. The program dates are Saturdays, February 2nd, 9th, 16th, & 23rd. Sessions will be from 9 AM-10 AM, 10 AM-11 AM, & 11 AM- 12 Noon. Classes will be held at the Recreation Annex, 35 Woodland Avenue for grades K-2. Fee is $40.00 per student.
24 FALL ADULT TENNIS INSTRUCTION
New for 2007! Adult fall tennis lessons will be held at the Streeter Courts for 6-week sessions starting the week of September 17th as follows: Beginners-Advanced Beginners on Mondays at 12 Noon to 1 PM or Tuesdays at 7 PM to 8 PM Advanced Beginners-Intermediates on Mondays at 1 PM to 2 PM. Advanced players on Thursdays at 1 PM to 2 PM, or 7 PM to 8 PM. Registration is limited to 12 participants per class. Registration fee is $25.00 per person, per session. If there are not enough registrations in a given class, the class will be canceled.
25 PEE WEE TENNIS LESSONS
New for 2007! A 6-week tennis program will be conducted by US Sports Institute for children 3-5 years of age. The program will be held at the Ginty Tennis Courts (near the Fire House) on Wednesdays from 1 PM to 2 PM starting September 26th to October 31st. The fee is $115.00 per child. Applications are available at the Parks & Recreation Office.
26 JUNIOR HIGH SPORTS NIGHT
Junior High Sports Night for 6th, 7th, & 8th grade boys & girls will be held at the Morristown Beard School Gym on Fridays: October 26th, November 9th & 23rd; December 7th & 21st; January 4th & 18th; and February 1st, 15th, & 29th. If you like to meet with friends and have fun, this is the place to come. There will be basketball, indoor soccer, volleyball, table games, and many other activities to provide fun nights. Time: 7 PM - 9 PM.
27 MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
For those men who enjoy a night of exercise, a night of volleyball is the solution. This is a great way to keep a good body tone. The program creates challenge and spirit as men test their skills on the court. Sneakers and shorts are strongly recommended. This program will start Monday, September 17th through May 19, 2008 from 7:30 PM- 9:30 PM at the Hillcrest School Gym. Registration fee is $25.00 per person.
28 ADULT COED VOLLEYBALL
The Coed Volleyball program will continue for the fall & winter season and run on Thursday evenings starting October 11th through May 1, 2008 from 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM at the Hillcrest School. Enjoy a night of fun & exercise. Registration fee is $15.00 per person.
29 PEE WEE VOLLEYBALL
Join this new program for 5 - 7 year olds. Pee Wee Volleyball for young sport's enthusiasts places emphasis on fun in a non-competitive atmosphere. The program will start on Saturday, March 1st and run through April 12th (No sessions on March 20th). Sessions will be held at the Sussex Avenue School gym as follows: 9 AM - 10 AM for 7 year olds, 10 AM - 11 AM for 6 year olds, & 11 AM - 12 Noon for 5 year olds. Registration fee is $15.00 per child.
30 GYMNASTICS
Classes are designed to give the student a solid foundation in gymnastics. All children benefit from the emphasis on coordination in this fitness oriented activity. Students will gain experience on the balance beam, bars, vault, mini trampoline, and floor mats. Gymnastics will begin at the Woodland School on Wednesday, January 9th and run through Wednesday, February 13th. Ages 5 -7 will go from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM, ages 8-12 will go from 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM.. Registration fee is $30.00 per child.
31 MEN'S BASKETBALL
Men's basketball will be held on Monday nights at the Sussex Avenue School Gym, from 7 PM - 9 PM. This program starts the 1st Monday in October, ends the last Monday in April, and is for MORRIS TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS ONLY. Each registrant will be issued an ID card with proper proof of address. Please fill out the registration form and include your driver's license number. If there are not enough participants, the program will be canceled. Registration fee is $25.00 per person for the year.
32 HOT-SHOTS BASKETBALL
All Ages - Children to Adults This event will be held on Saturday, February 2nd from 8 AM - 10 AM at the Frelinghuysen School. Participants by various age groups will have the opportunity to shoot 10 shots from designated spots on the basketball courts. Prizes will be awarded in each age group to the shooters with the highest scores. Call the Parks & Recreation Office at 973-326-7371 to sign up.
33 PEE WEE BOYS & GIRLS BASKETBALL
A very popular program for the younger sports enthusiasts ages 4-7. Pee Wee Basketball meets at the Sussex Avenue School Gym. The program start date is Saturday, December 8th and runs through February 23rd from 8:45 AM - 9:45 AM for 7 yr. olds, 10 AM - 10:45 AM for 4 yr. olds, 11 AM - 11:45 AM for 5 yr. olds, & 12 Noon - 12:45 PM for 6 yr. olds. Please note that due to school closings, classes will not be held on January 14th and February 18th. Registration fee per child is $15.00.
34 BOYS' BASKETBALL (8 - 14 years)
This is a great opportunity to develop basic skills. An instructional basketball clinic introduces, develops, and fine-tunes the skills of the basketball player. The program will take place at the Frelinghuysen School from 8 AM - 10 AM on Saturdays starting December 1st and ending February 23rd. Intramural league competition will be formed early in the program. So sign up as soon as possible for a fun time. Registration fee is $20.00 per student.
35 ON THE MOVE GIRLS' BASKETBALL (Ages 8-12 years)
This clinic is for girls who like to have fun, hang out with friends, & want to learn to play basketball. No skills are required, just enthusiasm, & fun. This is a great opportunity for girls to develop the basic skills & to fine-tune the skills of the female basketball player. This program will be held at the Sussex Avenue School gym, on Friday nights starting January 4th & run for eight Fridays to March 14th from 7 PM - 9 PM. Please note that due to school closings, classes will not be held on January 18th and February 15th. Registration fee is $15.00 per student.
36 MEN'S INDOOR SOCCER
Men's soccer will be held at the Sussex Avenue School Gym on Tuesday nights, starting October 2nd from 7 PM-9 PM through March 6th. If we do not have enough participants the program will be canceled. Registration fee is $25.00 per person for the season.
37 BOYS' & GIRLS' INDOOR SOCCER
Interest in this winter indoor soccer program continues to grow among young soccer players each year. The participants will improve their basic skills and compete in informal competition. The program is open to both boys & girls in grades 3-5. The program will be held on Wednesdays starting December 5th through February 13th at the Sussex Avenue School Gym, from 7 PM - 8 PM or 8 PM - 9 PM. Registration fee is $15.00 per child.
38 NERF SOCCER
This indoor program for first & second grade boys & girls is designed to be instructional in nature. It will cover the basic skills of soccer as well as some techniques of play. Registration is limited. Sign up now to avoid disappointment. This program will be held at the Morristown Beard School Auxiliary Gym on Whippany Road on Saturdays starting December 1st through February 23rd from 9:30 AM-10:30 AM, or 10:30 AM-11:30 AM. Registration fee is $15.00 per child.
39 GIRLS' FIELD HOCKEY
The Girls' Field Hockey program was started in the spring of 2003. This year the program will start Saturday, April 19th & run until Saturday, May 24th at Green Field. Girls 10-14 are eligible to participate. Due to so many activities on Saturday mornings, Girl's Field Hockey will be at 2 PM - 4 PM. Registration fee is $15.00 per child.
40 JUMP ROPE
The "Double-Dutch League" continues to draw a large number of participants. The jump rope program will be held on Friday evenings during the dull winter months at the Woodland School Gym. Dates: January 4th through March 28th. Please note that due to school closings, classes will not be held on January 18th, February 15th, & March 21st. Time: 7 PM - 8 PM for ages 6-9 and 8 PM - 9 PM for ages 10-14. Registration fee is $10.00 per child.
41 INDOOR GOLF
A course for the beginner or "brush-up" for the novice! Feel at ease when invited out on the golf course. Here is your chance to learn how. Emphasis is placed on the following fundamentals: stance and pivot, back swing, down swing, use of hands, wrist and arms, and the etiquette of golf. This program will held from 7 PM-8 PM starting Tuesday, February 26th and will run for five weeks ending on March 25th. The class is held at the Frelinghuysen School Gym and is for residents 18 years of age and over. Registration fee is $25.00 per participant.
