Chimney Cleaning

Telephone solicitors have been calling for chimney cleanings in Morris Township in recent weeks. They are offering a chimney cleaning for a nominal fee, usually around $40 or $50.

During this cleaning process, or even before they start, you may be informed that you have serious damage to your chimney or flue and that you may need a flue liner installed.

This type of work requires a permit from the Building Department. This permit is for your protection! The permit requires that the installer submit detailed information on the equipment of products being installed prior to the work being done. If your contractor does not want to go through the process of getting permits, then you should take this as a warning.

This permit process allows the Building/Fire Departments time to make sure that your chimney actually needs a liner, and that:

  • the equipment being installed meets the requirements of the BOCA Building Code
  • the equipment is properly sized for your furnace and/or water heater
  • the product is approved by a national testing agency such as UL (Underwriters Labs) or FM (Factory Mutual)

If you have any questions, please call:
The Building Department at (973) 326-7445 or (973) 326-7446; or
The Fire Department at (973) 326-7464 or (973) 326-7463.
